About The Artist

Learning to Fly

I’ve been a truck driver, bartender, babysitter, carpenter
I’ve traveled this country on my thumb
I’ve been a dishwasher, taxi driver, house painter, janitor
some folks have called me a bum

I’ve slept under bridges and by rivers and lakes
fought fears of sleeping with the spiders and snakes
I’ve lived without food for days at a time
and havin’ friends to help me helped to ease my mind

I’ve been a salesman, a manager, house sitter, counselor
I’ve traveled this country on my thumb
I’ve been a dispatcher, bookkeeper, college prof and store clerk
some folks have called me a bum

I’ve slept in the mountains under stars in the sky
and in my dreams I was learning to fly
I’ve lived without a home for years at a time
and havin’ friends to help me helped to ease my mind

I’ve been a father, son and brother, a husband, friend and lover
I’ve traveled this country on my thumb
I’ve taken stands and been a runner, I’ve lost and been a winner
some folks have called me a bum

But I learned a few things that help me get by
and in my dreams I was learning to fly
I know that I’ve been searchin' for the reason and rhyme
and havin’ friends to help me’s helped to ease my mind

yeah, I’ve learned a few things that help me get by
and in my dreams I’m still learning to fly
I know that I’ll keep searchin' for the reason and rhyme
and havin’ friends to help will help to ease my mind
